SPEECH OR DRAMA, Which should by child attend?

Idealy BOTH - but pressures of time or finance may mean you must choose between the two subjects. FIRSTLY: remember they are VERY DIFFERENT CLASSES and their aims are different. This is why they provide such a GOOD BALANCE.

THE DRAMA CLASS
The Drama Class will usually be a larger class. This is essential for FLOW and ENERGY, so that the children are never aware of feeling AWKARD or EXPOSED. The function of the tutor is more that of LEADER. Classes are very well planned and structured, but must appear totally spontaneous. The Children are stimulated but THEY produce the end product from their inner resources - there must be NO DRILLING. Above all, children ENJOY Drama. It provides an outlet for SELF EXPRESSION and helps the development of IMAGINATION and ARTISTIC awareness and develops orderly thinking and the ability to organise. The qualities that are good for DRAMA are those that are good for LIVING - if Stage or Film parts result - that is a BONUS - it is NOT the Primary aim of the Drama Classes.

THE SPEECH CLASS

The Speech Class will be a smaller class, as instruction is on a one-to-one basis. Of necessity, it is a more FORMAL class but nonetheless enjoyable. Children receive tuition on BREATHING, PRODUCING THE VOICE, ACHIEVING GOOD TONE, all in the form of game exercises. They learn to speak CLEARLY and DISTINCTLY and to use the muscles as required for good DICTION. Use of language and a love of words is fostered through games and storytelling. They are introduced to the works of great poets, both CLASSICAL and MODERN. They work towards an examination or Feis Competition (or both) with set texts, but most IMPORTANTLY they learn to express themselves in a fluent, spontaneous and persuasive manner and to realise that SPEECH is an expression of their OWN PERSONALITY and each person's speech is therefore totally personal and unique.
